Background
On November 20, 1940 constituted as the 77th Bombardment Squadron (77th BS) in the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC). On January 15, 1941 activated the 42nd Bombardment Group (42nd BG) at Salt Lake City in Utah. On June 20, 1941 became part of the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). On June 4, 1941 moves to Boise, Idaho.

Wartime History
On December 29, 1941 moves to Elmendorf Field in Alaska. On January 2, 1942 assigned to the 28th Composite Group (28th CG). On May 30, 1942 begins operating from Umnak. On October 3, 1942 moves to Adak. On July 22, 1943 operates from Attu. On September 11, 1943 moves to Amchitka. On February 11, 1944 returns to Attu.
