Background
On February 22, 1942 activated as the 317th Transport Group (317th TG) in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). On July 4, 1942 redesignated 317th Troop Carrier Group (317th TCG). Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 54th Troop Carrier Wing (54th TCW) in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA). The 317th Troop Carrier Group (317th TCG) includes Headquarters Squadron (HQ), 39th Troop Carrier Squadron (39th TCS), 40th Troop Carrier Squadron (40th TCS), 41st Troop Carrier Squadron (41st TCS) and 46th Troop Carrier Squadron (46th TCS).

The Headquarters Squadron (HQ) of the 317th Troop Carrier Group (317th TCG). On November 12, 1942 activated at Brisbane.

41st Troop Carrier Squadron (41st TCS)

On May 12, 1943 lost is C-47 Skytrain
41-18661 pilot 2nd Lt. Lorenzo R. Gower (MIA) crashed in the Owen Stanley Range.
