Background
On August 3, 1943 constituted as the 459th Fighter Squadron (459th FS) in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). Nicknamed "Twin Dragons". On September 1, 1943 activated in the 80th Fighter Group (80th FG) at Karachu Airfield in India (Pakistan).
Wartime History
On November 5, 1943 moves to Kurmitola Airfield in India (Bangladesh).
On March 4, 1944 moves to Chittagong Airfield in India (Bangladesh).
On June 6, 1944 seven P-38 took off from Chittagong Airfield on a fighter sweep and strafing mission against Meiktila in Burma. Approaching the target, the formation was intercepted from above by Oscars and Zeros [sic]. Without enough fuel to dog fight, the P-38s attempted to shake off the attackers and return to base. During the dog fight, lost is P-38H Lightning
42-67001 pilot 1st Lt. Burdett C. Goodrich (POW) and P-38J "Miss V" 42-67626 pilot Captain Walter F. Duke (MIA).
On November 28, 1944 the squadron emblem was approved.
On February 1, 1945 moves to Rumkha Airfireld in India.
On May 11, 1945 moves to Dudhkundi Airfield.
On May 12, 1945 assigned to 33rd Fighter Group (33rd FG).
On November 3, 1945 moves to Camp Kilmer in New Jersey. On November 5, 1945 inactivated.
