Wartime History
During July 1943 Torpedo Squadron 11 (VT-11) arrived at Henderson Field on Guadalcanal operating the TBF Avenger.

On May 19, 1943 TBF Avengers from VT-11 plus TBF Avengers from VMSB-143 damaged Houn Maru and force her to run aground off southern Bougainville.

On June 5, 1943 TBF Avengers from VT-11 participate in a bombing mission against Japanese shipping between Shortland and Bougainville. Lost is TBF-1 Avenger pilot Snell (MIA).

On July 18, 1943 TBF Avengers from VT-11 participate in a shipping strike against southern Bougainville. Lost is TBF-1 05992.
