Wewak
The main town area is built on a peninsula. Beautiful views of
Cape Moem and Cape Wom and the islands of Kairuri and Muschu just
offshore. Highly fortified by the Japanese it is still the heart
of the town today.
MV Busama
The wreckage of this ship lies to the side of the wharf
and is visible just above the water line.
Wewak Tunnels &
Fortifications
This peninsula was riddled with tunnels and fortifications by
the Japanese. Most of these tunnels were sealed up after the war
and many munitions dumped into the sea or abandoned. According
to locals, rascals use some of them.
Below are a series of near panorama photos of
the Wewak area, looking down from Kreer area. The left photo show
Cape Wom, with the flat Muschu
Island behind it and mountainous Kairuri further behind. The
middle photo shows the large peninsula of Wewak town. The right
photo show the wharf area. Brandi and
the Boram Airfield are further to the
right.
