Aircraft History Built by Boeing at Seattle. Constructors Number 2300. On January 4, 1942 delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-17E Flying Fortress serial number 41-2489 and flown to MacDill Field. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia then to Java. Wartime History On February 7, 1942 assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 19th Bombardment Group (19th BG), 93rd Bombardment Squadron (93rd BS). Nicknamed "Suzy Q". This bomber participated in the Java campaign then returned to Australia and was based at Mareeba Airfield, flying combat missions over New Guinea until late October 1942. In total, gunners aboard this B-17 claimed 26 enemy fighters shot down. During late October 1942, took off piloted by Lt. Col Richard H. Carmichael with co-pilot Major Felix M. Hardison with a total of fifteen aboard on a ferry flight across the Pacific via Hickam Field then onward to Hamilton Field. During November 1942, participated in a war bonds tour in the United States. On March 25, 1943 this bomber was involved in a taxi accident and repaired. On May 10, 1944 force landed five miles north of Junction City, Kansas. and was again repaired and returned to flying status. On June 8, 1944 at Peterson Field. On July 12, 1944 at Smoky Hill Field. On December 31, 1945 at San Bernadino Field. Fate On July 15, 1946 written off and reduced to spare parts. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
