Aircraft History Built by Consolidated at San Diego. Constructors Number 1367. Project Number 96034-R. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-24D-45-CO Liberator 42-40290. On February 28, 1943 flown to the Tucson modified center. On March 18, 1943 flown to Topeak. On April 6, 1943 flown to Long Beach. On April 13, 1943 assigned to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA). During April 13-27, 1943 ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 43rd Bombardment Group (43rd BG), 403rd Bombardment Squadron (403rd BS). Nicknamed "Tailskid Tolly" with a mule dragging its dirty rear end. The nose wheel had a pinwheel marking painted onto the wheel hub. During February 1944, assigned to the 22nd Bombardment Group (22nd BG), 408th Bombardment Squadron (408th BS) and used to transition crews for a month. By March 1944, transfered to the 5th Bomber Command Replacement Pool at 7 Mile Drome near Port Moresby. On April 25, 1994 took off on an operational training unit (OTU) training flight from Port Moresby with crew member A. J. Esler. Fate On August 15, 1944 condemned for salvage effective October 2, 1944. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
