Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-24J-195-CO Liberator serial number 44-41081. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field to the South Pacific. Wartime History Assigned to the 13th Air Force (13th AF), 868th Bombardment Squadron (868th BS) "Snooper Squadron". No known nickname or nose art. When lost, engines and weapon serial numbers not noted in Missing Air Crew Report 16230 (MACR 16230). Mission History On April 21, 1945 took off from Leyte (APO 719) piloted by 1st Lt. William H. Beaver on an armed shipping and photographic reconnaissance (mission number 868-616) over the Makassar Strait off Sulawesi (Celebes). Over the target, this B-24 was rammed by a Japanese fighters over Mandai Airfield near Makassar and crashed into the sea. Memorials The entire crew was officially declared dead on February 21, 1946. All are memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. Beaver earned the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart, posthumously. Resech earned the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart, posthumously. Kullerstrand earned the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart, posthumously. Eldredge earned the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart, posthumously. He also has a memorial marker at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, CA. Quicksilver earned the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart, posthumously. McCarthy earned the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart, posthumously. Rojo earned the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart, posthumously. Krawczyk earned the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart, posthumously. Ptak earned the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart, posthumously. Lever earned the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart, posthumously. He also has a memorial marker at Hillside Cemetery in Andover, NY.
