On October 16, 1943 engineer SSgt Ernest S. Roberts aboard B-25D Mitchell 41-30561 went Missing In Action (MIA) on a mission against Wewak and ditched off Cape Moen and was captured by the Japanese and became a Prisoner Of War (POW) later executed at St. John's Mission on Kairiru Island.
