Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-25C-25 Mitchell serial number 42-64779. Later, converted to a B-25G model. Ferried overseas to China-Burma-India (CBI). Wartime History Assigned to the 10th Air Force (10th AF), 341st Bombardment Group (341st BG), 490th Bombardment Squadron (490th BS). No known nickname or nose art. When lost, engines installed at the time of loss were R-1830-13 serial numbers (left) 42-271901 and (right) 42-47204. Serial numbers of weapons installed are included in the Missing Aircrew Report 2450 (MACR 2450). Mission History On February 22, 1944 took off from Kurmitola Airfield in India (Bangladesh) piloted by Captain Harry S. Sutphen on a low level bombing mission to search for targets of opportunity. The aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and was seen to burst into flames at approximately 11:45 hours, at position 22° 02' N, 95° 03' E southwest of Monywa west of the Chindwin River. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials The entire crew was officially declared dead the day of the mission. The entire crew are memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. Relatives John Riley, Jr: "[Sgt Irvin G. Playez] is my Uncle. His plane 42-64779, was shot down in flames and crashed near the Chindwin River."
