Aircraft History Built by Grumman in Bethpage, NY as model G-15. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as J2F-5 Duck bureau number 00791. Wartime History On February 15, 1942 assigned to Naval Air Station New York (NAS New York). On March 16, 1942 assigned to Marine Fighting Squadron 111 (VMF-111) at San Diego. Sent overseas to the South Pacific (SoPAC). On February 16, 1943 assigned to Marine Air Group 13 (MAG-13) at Tufuna Airfield (Pago Pago) on Samoa. On November 1, 1943 assigned to Utility Squadron 12 (VJ-12). No known markings or squadron number. Sometime after November 1943, the aircraft was assigned to the Pool Squadron on Guadalcanal. Sometime afterwards, this Duck was damaged, crashed or abandoned. Officially written off September 30, 1945. Display A pontoon from this Duck with the stenciled bureau number was abandoned on Guadalcanal. It is unclear if the rest of the aircraft survived or was scrapped or otherwise disappeared. During the 1970s, the pontoon was recovered by Fred Kona and moved to the Vilu War Museum where it has been on display since.
