Aircraft History Built by Kawanishi at Naruo during 1944. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as N1K2-Ja Shiden-Kai (George) manufacture number 5312 as a fighter-bomber variant with under wing mounts for four 30 kg or four 60 kg bombs or two 250 kg bombs. Wartime History In early September 1945 surrendered to American occupation forces in Japan. During November 1945, embarked aboard USS Barnes (CVE-20) as one of 145 captured Japanese planes then transported to the United States for technical evaluation. Display This Shiden-Kai was transfered to the National Museum of the United States Air Force (USAF Museum). Initially, the museum believed the manufacture number was 62387 and restored for static display with tail code 343-A-11 in a single line, incorrectly representing a Shiden-Kai assigned to 343 Kokutai (343 Air Group). During 2007-2008, re-restored and repainted with tail code ヨ-105 with a yellow horizontal stripe above representing a Shiden-Kai assigned to Yokosuka Kōkūtai (Yokosuka Air Group). Today, displayed in the World War II Pacific War Aircraft Collection to the left of B-29 "Bockscar Car" 44-27297.
