P-38 Lightnings from the 431st Fighter Squadron in four finger formation over Leyte Gulf
(Center Upper) P-38L "Doots" 44-24876 Tail 122 flying as the element leader no. 3 position.
(Center Right) P-38L Lightning 44-24845 Tail 112 piloted by Captain Fred Champlin in the flight leader no. 1 position leading the formation. On January 7, 1945 this aircaft was piloted by Major Thomas B. McGuire, Jr. on a fighter sweep and lost over Negros and crashed.
