Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 422-???? (last four digits unknown). At the factory, completed with an unpainted aluminum finish with olive drab on the upper nose and inner sides of the engine nacelles for anti-glare. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38J Lightning serial number unknown. Likely, this aircraft was P-38J-15 or P-38J-20. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 49th Fighter Group (49th FG), Headquarters Squadron. Squadron Number 83 in large black digits on each side of the nose. The outer boom air intake also had 83 in black. The propeller spinners were red. The tail had red and white stripes with a blue edge with 42. The left side of the nose had a black rectangle wrapped around the leading edge of the wing fillet with Major Gerald R. Johnson with a scoreboard of Japanese rising sun flags indicating Johnson's 15 aerial victory claims (5 x 5 x 5). No nickname or nose art. On October 14, 1944 took off from Morotai piloted by Major Gerald R. Johnson on a mission over Balikpapan and claimed a Tojo and Oscar and was awarded his thirteenth and fourteenth aerial victories. During November 1944 operated from Tacloban Airfield on Leyte. During this period, photographed with aces posing in front of the plane. Ultimate fate unknown likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
