Aircraft History
Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number unknown. At the factory painted with olive drab upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38 Lightning serial number unknown. This aircraft is likely a P-38F or P-38G. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled.

Wartime History
Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF). No known nickname or nose art. Tail Number 96. Assigned to either the 35th Fighter Group (35th FG), 39th Fighter Squadron (39th FS) or 49th Fighter Group (49th FG), 9th Fighter Squadron (9th FS).

On March 29, 1943 in New Guinea suffered an landing or ground accident that caused the nose landing gear to collapse, crushing the nose cone and broke off the left propeller with the tail angled upward. Photographed with the caption: "Mar 29, 43 P-38 crack-up". The location with either 14 Mile Drome (Schwimmer) near Port Moresby or Horanda Airfield near Dobodura.

Keith Hopper adds:
"I have a photo of P-38 #96 at the 27th ADG facility at Erima (Jackson). I believe it's the same aircraft. It has the outer wings removed. So, either being assembled, or being repaired. I haven't identified any nose damage, yet."

Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
