Pilot Captain Lee R. Everhart, O-663027 C. O. 35th FS (MIA / KIA) IL Crashed October 12, 1944 MACR none Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38L Lightning serial number unknown. Shipped overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 8th Fighter Group (8th FG), 35th Fighter Squadron (35th FS). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On October 12, 1944 took off from Wama Airfield on Morotai piloted by Captain Lee R. Everhart on a dive bombing and strafing mission against Mapanget Airfield on Celebes (Sulawesi). Over the target, this P-38 was hit by ground fire and observed to dive into the ground and crash at Mapanget Airfield. Robert Rocker adds: "Lee Everhart, the C.O. of the 35th FS with six victories was killed strafing this strip in his P-38L flying from Morotai. He was hit by ground fire while dive bombing Mapanget airfield and his aircraft caught on fire and he did not exit the aircraft as it dove vertical into the ground on October 12th, 1944." Wreckage Everhart was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing.
