Pilot 1st Lt. Robert E. Ferner, O-421740 (KIA, BR) Michigan City, IN Crashed November 8, 1942 MACR none Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38F Lightning serial number unknown. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled. Wartime History During November 1942 assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 49th Fighter Group (49th FG), 17th Fighter Squadron (Provisional) at Amberley Field. No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On November 8, 1942 took off from Amberley Field piloted by 1st Lt. Robert E. Ferner on a training flight and lost control at 5,000' in a dive and was killed in the crash. Recovery of Remains After the crash, his remains were recovered and buried in Australia. Postwar, transported to the United States for permenant burial. Memorials Ferner was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City, IN. Reference NARA World War II Army Enlistment Records - Robert E.
