Aircraft History Built by Republic at the Indiana Division of Republic Aviation in Evansville, IN. Constructor Number 1029. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-47D-15-RA Thunderbolt serial number 42-23278. Postwar, sold as war surplus. In 1947 owned by Hancock College of Aeronautics, Santa Maria, California and used as an instructional airframe. On May 7, 1954 transfered to the University of Southern California (USC) in Santa Maria, California. Later that year, sold to Bob Bean Aircraft in Blythe, CA and registered as N5087V. On October 1, 1957 to W.F. Paterson then back to Bob Bean Aircraft. During 1961 to Republic Aviation. On March 18, 1964 registered as N347D. During November 1964 donated by Republic Aviation to the National Museum of the United States Air Force (USAF Museum). Display Since November 1964 displayed at the USAF Museum. During the early 1990s, painted with a white cowling the markings of a P-47 Thunderbolt that served in Alaska. Around 2003, painted in the markings of P-47D "Fiery Ginger IV" 42-22668 piloted by Col. Neel E. Kearby. Since 2005, displayed next to the tail section and a machine gun salvaged from P-47D "Fiery Ginger IV" 42-22668.
