Aircraft History
Built by Consolidated Aircraft Corporation at San Diego. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as PBY-5 Catalina bureau number 04507.

Wartime History
Assigned to Fleet Air Wing 1 (FAW-1), Patrol Squadron 91 (VP-91). Side Number 91-P-2. No known nickname or nose art.

Mission History
On October 15, 1942 took off from Peou Bay (Pallu Passage) off Vanikoro Island (Vanikolo) piloted by Lt(jg) Dighton L. Polan on a patrol and planned to then land at Espiritu Santo. During the patrol, intercepted and shot down by A6M2 Zeros from Zuiho and Shokaku and was shot down. When this Catalina failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Also lost patrolling was PBY-5 Catalina 2297 pilot Lt. Lt(jg) Gordon B. Snyder (1 rescued, 7 MIA)

Memorials
The entire crew was officially declared dead on December 4, 1945. Each earned the Purple Heart, posthumously. All are memorialized at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing. Polan, Ripple, Moore and Morris on court 1. Young on court 2. Lincoln on court 3.

Lincoln is also memorialized on his father's grave at Bloomfield Cemetery in Bloomfield, NJ.

Ripple also has a memorial maker at Fort Custer National Cemetery at section MA site 207.

Morris also has a memorial marker at Calvary Episcopal Church Cemetery in Fletcher, NC.
