    Vanikoro Island (Vanikolo) Santa Cruz Islands | Temotu Province Solomon Islands
Location
Lat 11° 39' 0S Long 166° 54' 0E  Vanikoro Island is located in the Santa Cruz Island Group (Santa Cruz Islands) in in the Solomon Islands. Also known as "Vanikolo" and is the furthest to the south in the Santa Cruz Island Group. On the southwest coast is Peou Bay (Pallu Passage). Borders Saboe Bay. Located 1,100 miles from the Coral Sea and 800 miles from Guadalcanal.

Prewar
The Kauri Timber Company operated a powerful radio set on the island. This same radio was utilized during the war by the only female coastwatcher in the Pacific, Ruby Boye. When the Pacific war started, all Europeans and women were evacuated from the island. Two stayed, husband and wife: Ruby Boye and Skov Boye.

Female Coastwatcher Ruby Boye
Since 1939, Ruby Boye was operating the radio on Vanikoro and was appointed as a coastwatcher by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). She broadcast the weather four times a day and often her transmission through when other stations did not. In 1942, she was 51 years old.

Third US Army Outpost
During 1942 when the U.S. Army arrived, the location was designated the Third US Army Outpost, and Ruby was was under the command of the U.S. Navy. Her role expanded to include sending intelligence messages to coastwatcher, and the U.S. Intelligence headquarters in Port Vila. Boye's broadcasts were vital and appreciated by Allied aviators and sailors. She was visited by Admiral Halsey, who landed in a PBY Catalina came ashore to meet Ruby and thank her for here work. She was relieved in late 1943, after two years of service, and was transported by PBY Catalina to Sydney for shingles treatment. She was the only female coastwatcher in the Pacific during World War II.
