Lawrence (survived) Crashed March 11, 1944 Aircraft History Built by Lockheed as model 237-27-01 in Burbank. Constructors Number 5743. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as PV-1 Ventura bureau number 34853. Disassembled and shipped to Oahu then across the Pacific to New Zealand as part of defense aid. Wartime History On October 2, 1943 assigned to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) as PV-1 Ventura NZ4540 and reassembled by Unit 12 at Ohakea Airfield. Assigned to No. 2 Squadron with tail number 43. Ferried northward via Espiritu Santo and Henderson Field on Guadalcanal then onward to Munda Airfield on New Georgia. Mission History On March 11, 1944 during take off from Munda Airfield piloted by Flight Lieutenant M. H. McFarlane swung off the runway and damaged the right wing and broke off the wingtip. None of the crew were injured in the crash. Officially, written off the books on Guadalcanal. Wreckage Ater the crash, three photographs were taken of the damage Ventura. This PV-1 was stripped for usable parts in the bone yard area then abandoned. Ultimate fate unknown likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared at Munda Airfield.
