Location Lat 22° 39' 17N Long 88° 26' 48E Dum Dum Airfield was located at Dum Dum near Calcutta (Kolkata) in West Bengal State in India. Also spelled Dum-Dum or Dam Dam. Today, known as Kolkata Airport or Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. Construction Built prewar. Prior to construction, the airfield area was open ground adjacent to the Royal Artillery Armoury at Dum Dum, known as Calcutta Aerodrome or Calcutta Field. Prewar History In 1924, Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij (KLM) Royal Dutch Airlines began making stopovers at this airfield as part of their Amsterdam to Batavia (Jakarta) route. Also, an RAF aircraft landed as part the first round-the-world expedition. In February 1929, Sir Stanley Jackson, Governor of Bengal, opened the Bengal Flying Club at this location. Also known as Dum Dum Airfield or Calcutta Airfield. In 1930, upgrade for year round use. Soon, other airlines began using the airfield including Air Orient as a stopover for their air service from Paris to Saigon. In 1933, British Imperial Airways as part of their London to Australia route. On June 17, 1937 Lockheed Model 10E Electra 1055 piloted by Amelia Earhart with navigator Frederick Joseph "Fred" Noonan landed at Dum Dum Airfield during her attempt to circumnavigation the world. She arrived from Karachi Airfield and departed the next day on June 18, 1937 bound for Bangkok but due to bad weather instead landed at Akyab Airfield in Burma (Myanmar). Wartime History On April 16, 1942 six 10th Air Force B-17E Flying Fortresses from Dum Dum Airfield to bomb Rangoon. On May 12, 1942 four 10th Air Force B-17s from Dum Dum Airfield bomb Myitkjina Airfield. American units based at Dum Dum 7th BG, HQ Karachi May 30, 1942–September 9, 1942 departs Karachi Today Still in use today as Kolkata Airport or Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. The airport is a civilian port of entry airport with two runways. The first is oriented 19L/01R measures 11,900' x 150' surfaced with asphalt.
