| Location Myitkjina Airfield was located at Myitkjina (Myitkyina) roughly 287 miles east of Ledo. Myitkyina was the northernmost airfield in Burma. Today located in Kachin State in Myanmar (Burma). Construction Built prewar, this airfield had two runways: Myitkyina Airfield (North) located at Lat 97° 24' 0" E Long 25° 24' 0" N. Myitkyina South Airfield (Miitokina) located at Lat 97° 21' 0" E Long 25° 23' 0" N. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese on on May 8, 1942. Used by the Japanese until May 17, 1944. American missions against Myitkyina May 12, 1942–May 31, 1944 American-trained Chinese troops and American guerrillas under Brigadier General Frank D. Merrill "Merrill's Marauders" sustained by airdrops captured Myitkjina Airfield on May 17, 1944. On May 23, the Japanese counterattacked unsuccessfully, in a failed attempt to recapture the airfield. Afterwards, Myitkjina was developed into an American airfield. On January 15, 1945 USAAF Lieutenant Generals Albert C. Wedemeyer, Commanding General China Theater, George E. Stratemeyer, Commanding General Eastern Air Command, and Daniel I. Sultan, Commanding General India-Burma Theater, confer at Myitkyina and agree that an AAF HQ to command the US Tenth and Fourteenth Air Forces should be set up in China.
