| Location Lat 25° 23' 11N Long 97° 23' 40E Myitkjina is located at an elevation of 830' / 252m in Kachin State in northern Burma. Wartime spelling "Myitkyina". The town was strategically important not because of the road, rail road and river links to the rest of Burma. To the west is Mogaung and to the north is Nsopzup. Located roughly 287 miles to the west is Ledo. Today, Myitkjina is the state capital of Kachin State in Myanmar. Wartime History Myitkjina was occupied by the Japanese Army. Attacked by American bombers and later fighters starting in May 1942 until November 1944. On July 30, 1944 the Japanese Army under the command of General Masaki Honda at Myitkyina ordered a withdrawal and commits suicide. By August 1944, occupied by Allied forces under the command of U.S. Army General Joseph Stilwell after a prolonged siege and heavy fighting by the the Northern Combat Area Command including Nationalist Chinese, Chindits and Merrill's Marauders.
