Wartime History
During the night of February 18, 1942 to February 19, 1942 Japanese forces landed on Bali Island and occupied Depasar and Depasar Airfield.

In the first two days of the occupation, the Allies were not fully aware Depasar Airfield had been occupied and several Allied planes landed or attempted to land before realizing it was captured.

On February 19, 1942 unaware the airfield had been captured by the Japanese, B-17E "Monkey Bizz-Ness" 41-2417 landed at Denpasar Airfield and was fired on by the Japanese. Realizing he was under attack, pilot McPherson immediately took off again, narrowly avoiding capture.

By February 20, 1942 the first Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) fighters and bombers began operating from Depasar Airfield. That morning, A-24 Dive Bomber pilot 41-15760 pilot 2nd Richard H. Launder attempted to land at Denpasar Airfield believing it to be in Dutch hands, but saw a parked Japanese plane and aborted his landing.

On February 27, 1942 G4M1 Betty bombers from the Takao Kokutai (Takao Air Group) led by Lieutenant Jiro Adachi took off from Denpasar Airfield on a mission to bomb USS Langley (AV-3).
