Location Chimu Airfield is located near Chimu on the eastern coast of Okinawa Island in Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Also known as Chimu Field. Construction During late April 1945, the U.S. Navy (USN) 40th Naval Construction Battalion (40th CB) "Seabees" surveyed this area for an airfield. On May 6, 1945 construction commenced on a single runway for use as a fighter strip. During construction, enemy mortar and sniper fire occasionally hampered construction. By July 1, 1945 a single runway measuring 5,000' x 300' was completed at this location. The control tower was situated on a high bluff overlooking the runway. During July 1945 the USN also built Chimbu Seaplane Base nearby but ceased to be used after it was damaged by typhoons during September 1945 and October 1945. Wartime History During July 1945 used by the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) as a fighter airfield used by Marine Air Wing 2 (MAW-2) and Marine Air Group 22 (MAG-22) and Marine Air Group 31 (MAG-31).
