Location
Chiran Airfield is located at Chiran in Kagoshima Prefecture on the southern tip of Kyūshū Island in Japan. To the northeast is Kagoshima. To the east is Kagoshima Bay. To the southeast is Ibusuki. To the north is Ichiki.

Construction
Built by Japanese as a military airfield.

Wartime History
In 1942, the Tachiarai Joint Service Flight School was established in Chiran Airfield for flight training. By the middle of 1944 Chiran Airfield became used for special attack (kamikaze) flight training. Starting in late March 1945 attacked by U.S. aircraft until the end of the Pacific War.

During April 1945 during the Okinawa campaign, Chiran Airfield was one of the airfields used for kamikaze missions against Okinawa, In total 1,036 Kamikaze pilots took off from Chiran Airfield, Bansei Airfield, Miyakonoja Airfield and other airfields in southern Japan plus Kamikaze pilots from the 8th Flight Division on Formosa (Taiwan) and Giretsu Airborne Division. Their kamikaze attacks resulted in the sinking of 56 ships, 107 heavily damaged and 300 damaged.
