Location Lat 7° 10' 0" Long 125° 30' 0" Matina Airfield was located to the southwest of Davao (Davao City) bordering Davao Gulf on the southeastern corner of Mindanao in the Philippines. Also know as Davao No. 2 or Navy No. 2. Until 1967, part of Davao Province until subdivided into three provinces. Today located in Davao del Sur Province. Construction Built by the Japanese as a military airfield with a single runway oriented roughly north to south that terminated at the coast. Wartime History Used by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as a military airfield. The 1st Air Fleet was based at Davao in anticipation of an invasion by American forces sometime during late 1944 and supported aerial operations over Leyte. Japanese units based at Matina 153 Kokutai, 901 Hikotai (J1N1 Irving) August 1944 equipped with both the early and the late models, later dispersed to Tacloban, Cebu and Nichols. Starting on September 1, 1944 attacked by American bombers and later fighter aircraft until neutralized by March 1945. American missions against Matina September 1, 1944–March 5, 1945 Today Disused since the war, redeveloped into housing and commercial property.
