Waterous Airfield (Magarin, Mapaya) Occidental Mindoro Philippines

USAAFE 1939
Location
Waterous Airfield was located to the east of Magarin Bay in Occidental Mindoro on Mindoro Island in the Southwestern Tagalog Region (MIMAROPA Region) of the Philippines. To the northwest is Caminawit and to the south is Caguray. Also known as Magarin Airfield or Mapaya Airfield.

Construction
Built prewar during 1939 as a private airport with two runway surfaced with sandy gravel. The first runway was oriented north to south measures 3,300' x 150'. The second runway was oriented northeast to southwest measures 1,980' x 150'. Both runways tended to become muddy during wet season.

Named Waterous Airfield for Dr. Willard H. Waterous whose home and hacienda (plantation) were to the south. Dr. Waterous was recalled to active services during the outbreak of the Pacific War and was assigned to Hospital No. 2 on Bataan. On April 9, 1942 he became a Prisoner Of War (POW) of the Japanese and was liberated in February 1945 by the U.S. Army.

Wartime History
Used by USAAFE during the defense of the Philippines as a stop-over for ferrying supplies from the southern Philippines to Bataan. During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, not used or improved and all buildings at the hacienda were burned down. By late 1944, the runway was overgrown with grass.
