Location Balgai Airfield was located at Balgai. To the southeast is Balgai Bay. Further to the northwest is Panapai and Panapai Airfield and further beyond is Kavieng and Kavieng Airfield. Also spelled "Bagail" and "Balgail". Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Tikana Rural LLG of Kavieng District in New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Construction Built by the Japanese Navy during the Pacific War. This airfield had a single runway parallel to the northern and southern coastline of New Ireland oriented roughly northwest to southeast. Likely, the area was selected because it was naturally flat ground with kunai grass and easy to clear as a single runway. Wartime History Balgai Airfield was used to a limited capacity by the Japanese. Possibly, only used as an emergency landing ground. During 1944, Balgai Airfield was targeted by Allied planes. Allied missions against Balgai Airfield December 20, 1944 Today Disused since the Pacific War. Contribute
