Construction
Prewar, a small missionary airstrip then known as Nubia Airfield was built at this location the east of Nubia. The single runway was roughly 1,200' in length. This runway was disused by the start of the Pacific War and became known as "Old Nubia Airfield" after the Japanese built Nubia Airfield (Hansa South).

Wartime History
During the Pacific War, Old Nubia Airfield was never used by the Japanese or Allies. The former runway was noted on some wartime era maps.

During January 1943, occupied by the Japanese Army. During the Japanese occupation, ninety Chinese men, women and children captured in Madang were brought to Potsdam Plantation to farm a large vegetable garden to support the Army.

In the middle of June 1944, the Australian Army occupied Potsdam Plantation liberated the Chinese prisoners and developed it into a camp area for the 30th Infantry Battalion (Sepik Force) Headquarters. On June 16, 1944 War Correspondent F. Simpson, Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) visited this location to interview the Chinese. One of the Chinese was named Quan Yim who had a broken leg when liberated by the Australian Army.
