Location Naval Air Station San Diego is located at San Diego in San Diego County in California in the United States. During 1917 commissioned by the U.S. Navy (USN) as Naval Air Station San Diego (NAS San Diego). Also known as Halsey Field. Construction Built on North Island. During 1912, the US Army Signal Corps established the Signal Corps Aviation School at this location, the first school to provide flight training for military pilots. During 1917, U.S. Congress appropriated the land and two airfields on the island: NAS North Island (NAS North Island) and Rockwell Field into a single military facility. That same year, commissioned by the U.S. Navy (USN) as Naval Air Station San Diego (NAS San Diego). During 1935, the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC) moved to March Field. Afterwards, all of North Island was turned over to the U.S. Navy (USN), but it took three years to before all Army operations and personnel had departed.
