Location The Battle of Ormoc Bay happened in Ormoc Bay off the western coast of Leyte in the eastern Visayas Islands in the Philippines. The combatants were the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) versus the U.S. Navy (USN) plus aircraft from both sides. Wartime History The Battle of Ormoc Bay was a series of Naval actions between November 11, 1944 until December 21, 1944. The magnitude of fighting was eclipsed by the more famous Battle of Leyte Gulf, but the Japanese vigorously resisted against U.S. Navy warships using shore defenses, kamikaze attacks and local air supremacy. There were 70 airfields in the Philippines which mean Japanese planes could approach from short distances. During the action, several destroyers were sunk and others damaged. On December 7, 1944, U.S. Navy destroyer APDs with LCVP's landed the U.S. Army 77th Division at Ormoc at White 1 and White 2 beaches and met no opposition on the shore. At least one camouflaged E16A Paul T-301 was captured camouflaged near shore. Cmdr Foster of the USS Moale summarized the action: "My attention was focused on avoiding attacks from aircraft, possible torpedoes, enemy fire from surface ships and shore batteries. We were in a hot spot, hotter than we knew at the time."
