Ship History
Built by Fujinagata Shipyards in Osaka. Laid down April 5, 1941 as a Yūgumo-class destroyer. Launched March 5, 1942 as Naganami 長波 meaning "Long Waves" in Japanese. Commissioned June 30, 1942 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) under the command of Captain Tsutae Kumabe.

Wartime History
On July 20, 1942 departs Yokosuka escorting Hakusan Maru to Kiska Island then returns Yokosuka. On August 31, 1942 assigned to Destroyer Divison 31 (DesDiv 31) with Makinami and Takanami, Desron 2, Second Fleet.

On September 6, 1942 departs Kure escorting Kongo and Haruna south to Truk then to the northern Solomon Islands.

On October 11, 1942 departs Truk escorting Kongō and Haruna and Isuzu for a bombardment of Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. On October 12, 1942 in the northern Solomon Islands joined by other destroyers then on October 13, 1942 proceeds southward overnight to Guadalcanal. On October 14, 1942 at 1:37am Kongō and Haruna commence a shore bombardment of Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. Meanwhile, Isuzu and destroyers provide covering firing on shore gun batteries. The force steams eastward passing Lunga Point firing to starboard, then made a 180 degree turn and fires to port while departing. On the ground, the shelling damaged the two runways, burned fuel and destroyed 48 parked planes and resulted in 41 KIA. Although PT Boats attempt to intercept, they are driven away by Naganami. At 2:30am the force retires northward up "The Slot" at 29 knots.

During the night of November 30, 1942 Naganami led a supply-drum transport run to Guadalcanal as cover.

On November 30, 1942 during the Battle of Tassafaronga engaged Task Force 67 (TF-67) a U.S. cruiser-destroyer group and launched a spread of torpedoes that hit USS Pensacola (CA-24) and/or USS Northampton (CA-26).

PARTIAL HISTORY

On May 8, 1943, CruDiv 5 departs Truk for Yokosuka with destroyers Samidare, Naganami and Yugure as escorts.

On May 15, 1943, Haguro and Myoko with destroyers Samidare and Naganami depart Yokosuka as part of the Northern Force, bound for Paramushiro in response to the invasion of Attu.

On October 11, 1943, CruDiv 5 departs Truk with destroyers Naganami and Suzukaze escorts a convoy to Rabaul.

On October 13, 1943 DesRon 2's Naganami with destroyer-transports Amagiri, Yunagi, Uzuki and Yuzuki is part of escort of troops bound for Bougainville.

PARTIAL HISTORY

On June 1, 1944 assigned to Lieutenant Commander Kiyoshi Tobita.

On July 8, 1944 departed Kure escorting troop transports to Okinawa then proceeds to Lingga. On July 18, 1944 arrives Lingga and departs the same day escorting transports to Brunei Bay.

On October 23, 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Naganami escorted the 1st Diversion Attack Force under the command of Admiral Kurita. Assisted in the rescue of survivors from the sinking of Maya and transfered them to Musashi. Afterwards, escorts damaged Takao to Brunei Bay.

On October 26, 1944 departed Brunei Bay to Coron Bay then returned escorting damaged Myoko back to Brunei Bay. On October 24, 1944 with Hiyodori a boarding party inspects the abandoned shipwreck of USS Darter (SS-227) that ran aground on Bombay Shoal and removes various items including a .50 caliber machine gun. On October 29, 1944 returned to Brunei Bay arriving two days later at Manila Bay. On November 10, 1944 departed Manila Bay escorting troop convoy TA No. 3 bound for Ormoc Bay on Leyte.

Sinking History
On November 11, 1944 during the Battle of Ormoc Bay attacked by U.S. Navy (USN) carrier aircraft from Task Force 38 (TF-38). During their attacks, Naganami was hit triggering an explosion amidships broke the destroyer into two and quickly sank into Ormoc Bay at approximately 10°50′N 124°35′E. A total of 156 were killed or missing in the explosion and sinking. Also sunk were Hamanami, Wakatsuki and Shimakaze plus three transports.

Rescue
Afterwards, 72 of her crew were rescued including Lieutenant Commander Kiyoshi Tobita.

Memorial
A memorial to this destroyer is located at Koyoto Gokoku Jinja.

Shipwreck
During November 20017 the shipwreck was discovered by RV Petrel at a depth of 827' / 252m. In early January 2018, RV Petrel returned and confirmed the shipwreck based on the 5" guns and also located Shimakaze and Wakatsuki.
