FRIDAY, 10 SEPTEMBER 1943
ALASKA (Eleventh Air Force): Nine B-24's fly from Adak to Attu in preparation for a mission to Paramushiru tomorrow.
CHINA-BURMA-INDIA BURMA-INDIA (Tenth Air Force): B-25's again bomb Gokteik Viaduct
in Burma. The approaches are battered but the viaduct remains usable. The detachment
of ground personnel of the 491st Bombardment Squadron (Medium), 341st Bombardment
Group (Medium), at Gaya returns to base at Chakulia.
CHINA
(Fourteenth Air Force): Ten B-25's and seven P-40's hit a cotton warehouse
north of Wuchang and docks at Hankow; 9 of 20 intercepting Zekes are claimed destroyed;
9 P-38s bomb docks at Whampoa.
SOUTHWEST PACIFIC (Fifth Air Force): B-25's attack barges along the coast of New Britain. Lost is F-5A Lightning 42-13088 pilot 2nd Lt. Clifford O. Taylor (MIA). Crashed on take off B-26 "Easy Pickin'" 40-1368 pilot 1st Lt. Ralph P. Higgins (survived).
Australian Army: 7th Division flown in C-47s to Nadzab begins a push eastward toward Lae.
U.S. Army: 2d and 3d Bns of 27th Inf, 25th Div, are attached to 43d Div and ordered to Arundel to help 172d Inf. The 27th Inf commander is to be responsible for future operations on Arundel.
Australian Army: Aus 7th Div relieves the U.S. Army 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment (503rd PIR) at Nadzab and begins to drive eastward toward Lae with 25th Brig Gp. The
Japanese at Lae are now threatened from both the east and west.
USMC: Headquarters, V Amphibious Corps, was made directly responsible to ComCenPac.
