Location
Battery Smith is located on Corregidor
Island defending Manila Bay and the approach from the South China Sea.
Construction
Built by the U.S. Army to emplaced a 12" M1895A2 gun on a M1917 barbette carriage with a 26 mile flat trajectory range. This gun could
traverse 360 degrees. Possibly, a parapet was not built to allow lower depression of the gun barrel. Named Battery Smith. The other exposed battery was Battery Hearn.
Relatives
Erich Snoke (cousin of Donald R. Snoke):
"My distant cousin, then Lt Donald R. Snoke, Washington, PA was the commanding officer of Battery Smith, at the time of the surrender in May 1942. He was taken prisoner, and later died aboard a hellship, on January 9, 1945 in Formosa when it was bombed by aircraft from the USS Hornet."
Today
Battery Smith remains intact and is accessible to tourist touring Corregidor
Island. The original stenciled labels
are still visible on the walls of the battery.
