Gun History Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) as 15 cm Howitzer Type 96 (1936) serial number 137. Assigned to the 100th Independent Heavy Artillery Battalion and transported to Okinawa. Wartime History This gun was emplaced inside a cave near Shuri and Kadena Airfield. During the Battle of Okinawa, the barrel and frame are scared with bullet holes and shrapnel. Wreckage Postwar, excavated from the cave and exhibited at the U.S. Military Museum on Okinawa. Later, it was displayed in at the JSDF Base at Naha. On April 9, 1993, donated to Yasukuni Jinja (Yasukuni Shrine) as a monument to veterans of the heavy artillery association and displayed at Yūshūkan (Yasukuni Museum) in the main lobby at the entrance to the main exhibit hall.
