Location Lat 16° 55' 0S Long 145° 46' 0E Cairns is located on the coast of northern Queensland in Australia. Borders Cairns Harbor to the east and the Coral Sea. Wartime History During the Pacific War, Cairns was an Allied staging area. Cairns Harbor was developed for us as a Naval base and seaplane operating area. On July 31, 1942 a Japanese Navy Type 2 Flying Boat / H8K2 Emily flying boat bombed Mossman mistaking the area for Cairns. Catalina Memorial Cairns Esplanade Located on the Cairns Esplanade bordering Cairns Harbor. The memorial comprised of three white pillars with a model of a Consolidated Catalina atop. On February 28, 2016 a memorial plaque to the crew of Catalina A24-25 was added to the memorial. Sheridan Street Camp Army Camp located along Sheridan, Dutton and Spence Street. Cairns War Cemetery The Cairns War Cemetery is administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) with a 118 identified war graves. References Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CGWC) - Cairns War Cemetery Cairns Museum Located in town, this museum has an extensive photo collection of World War II era in Cairns, artifacts and displays. Cairns Airfield (Cairns Airport) Located to the north of Cairns still in use today as Cairns International Airport. Cairns Harbor (PT-Boat Base, Seaplane Base) Wartime airfield, still in use today Trinity Bay The site of amphibious training conducted by the US Army's 532nd Special Engineer Unit and at Palm Cove along the beach front there is a memorial plaque to this activity. There is also a memorial to Maj. Gen. Vasey, CG 7th Australian Division, who along with ten others was killed when a RAAF Hudson crashed into the water on approach to Cairns.
