| Location Lat 3° 36' 12S Long 128° 25' 8E Haroekoe is located at an elevation of 410' / 124m on the west coast of Haroekoe Island (Harakoe). Also known as Haruku, Harakoe, Samet Haroekoe or Kampoeng Haroekoe. To the north is Pelauw and Haroekoe Airfield (Harakoe, Pelauw). Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in Maluku Province (Moluccas Islands) in Indonesia. Wartime History During 1942 occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the Pacific War until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945. American missions against Haroekoe December 7, 1943–December 30, 1944 Haroekoe POW Camp Labor camp of mostly British, Australian captured in Malay, and Dutch from Ceram, they were used to build airfields, including Liang Airfield (Ambon East). After the official surrender of Japan, the Japanese captors executed 400 Australian POWs to prevent their war crimes from being known. Veteran Cyril Morris Royal Air Force (RAF) prisoner at Haroekoe POW Camp recalled: "Dawn to dusk hard labor building an airstrip [Haroekoe Airfield (Harakoe, Pelauw)].
