Location Lat 28°17′N Long 129°22′E Amami Ōshima 奄美大島 is the largest island in the Amami Islands (Amami-Guntō) in Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan. Located roughly halfway between Okinawa and Kyūshū. During the Pacific War known as "Amami-O-Shima" to the Americans. Wartime History During the Pacific War, the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) maintained an oil storage facility on Amami Ōshima. Also, a seaplane base with a ramp. By May 1945, the island was within range of American fighter based at Ie Shima and bombers elsewhere.
