Location Lat 28°17′N Long 129°22′E The Amami Islands 奄美群島 (Amami-Guntō) are part of the Satsunan Islands at the northern end of the Ryukyu Islands (Nansei Shoto) in Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan. Located roughly halfway between Okinawa and Kyūshū. The Amami Islands include Amami Ōshima (Amami-O-Shima), Kikai Jima (Kikaishima), Kakeromajima, Yoroshima, Ukejima, Tokunoshima (Tokuno), Okinoerabujima, Yoronjima, Edateku Island, Sukomobanare, Eniya Island, Yubanare Island and Kiyama Island. Wartime History By May 1945, the Amami Islands were within range of American fighter from Ie Shima and bombers elsewhere and were neutralized with aerial attacks by July 1945.
