| Location Minna Shima is a small sand islet in Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. The island is surrounded by the East China Sea. To the east and south is Okinawa Island. To the north four miles away is Ie Shima. Wartime History During the night of April 13, 1945 the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Marine Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion under the command of Major James L. Jones landed on Minna Shima to capture the island for use as a fire base. On April 15, 1945 the U.S. Army 305th Field Artillery Battalion and 902d Field Artillery Battalion plus the 155mm howitzers from the 306th Infantry Regiment were landed and quickly set up their guns. On April 16, 1945 these guns provided fire support for the U.S. Army landing four miles to the north on southern Ie Shima.
