| Location Minna Shima is a small sand islet in Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. The island is surrounded by the East China Sea. To the east and south is Okinawa Island. To the north is Ie Shima. Wartime History During the night of April 13, 1945 the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Marine Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion under the command of Major James L. Jones landed on Minna Shima to capture the island for use as a fire base. On April 15, 1945 landed was the U.S. Army 305th Field Artillery Battalion and 902d Field Artillery Battalion plus the 155mm howitzers from the 306th Infantry Regiment that quickly set up their guns to provide supporting fire for the U.S. Army landing on Ie Shima four miles to the north.
