Location Miyako Jima is the largest island in the Miyako Islands (Miyako Island Group) in the Sakishima Islands of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Also known as Miyako Shima, Miyakojima. In English known as Miyako Island. Surrounded by the East China Sea. Wartime History During the Pacific War, Japanese forces built Miyako Airfield on the island. Starting in late 1944 attacked by Allied fighters and bombers until the end of the Pacific War. Occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan.
