Location Guguan Island is located in the in the Northern Islands Municipality at the northern end of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) in the Mariana Island Group (Mariana Islands) in the United States of America (USA). Located roughly 56km south of Alamagan Island and 463km north of Saipan Island and 124km northeast of Sarigan Island. Prewar Discovered by Spanish explorers, the island was sold to Germany in 1899 and administered as part of German New Guinea. During 1909 until 1912, leased to a Japanese company. During World War I, Guguan came under the control of Japan and was officially mandated to Japan. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese until the end of the Pacific War. On June 30, 1945 B-29 Superfortresses from the 509th Composite Group (509th CG) conducted short bombing missions against Guguan. Postwar Administered by the United States as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Today Since 1978, the island has been part of the Northern Islands Municipality of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Today, Guguan Island is uninhabited. Contribute
