Location Buyr Nur (Buyr Lake or Lake Buyr) is a large freshwater lake that the Khalkhin Gol (Khalkhin River) empties into. In Mongolian known as "Buir Núr" or "Buir Nur". In Russian "Buyr Nur". During 1939, referred to as Lake Bor in English newspaper articles, it is unclear if this was a misspelling or alternate spelling. The lake is as deep as 164' / 50m in some portions of the lake. To the north and west was the border with Manchuria (Manchukuo) that is today part of China. Wartime History During the Battle of Khalkhin Gol (Nomonhan Incident) between May 1939 until September 1939, dog fights between Soviet and Japanese aircraft happened above the lake. During the battle, several Soviet airfields were located near the southern side of the lake, linked by rough roads. Also, an airfield was located at the northern tip of the lake, near Kharkha Miao. Today The southern portions of the lake in Mongolia have fisheries and small fishing villages. At the northern and western edge of the lake is the international border between Mongolia and China.
