Location Lat 11° 6' 35N Long 125° 23' 15E Balangiga is located at sea level in Eastern Samar Province on the southeast of Samar Island. To the west is the Balangiga River and San Miguel Bridge. History On August 11, 1901 at the conclusion of the Philippine–American War, a contingent of 74 soldiers from U.S. Army 9th US Infantry Regiment, Company C under the command of Captain Thomas W. Connell arrived in Balangiga to occupy the town, close the port and prevent supplies from reaching the interior of Samar. For the first months of the occupation, the soldiers and the townspeople seemed amicable. Balangiga Massacre On September 28, 1901 at 6:20am Balangiga residents made a surprise attack U.S. Army C Company, 9th Infantry and killed 54. The attack became known as the Balangiga Massacre. Also known as the Balangiga Encounter, Balangiga Incident or Balangiga Conflict. Of the 74 men in Company C, 36 were killed including all commissioned officers, 4 went missing and 22 were wounded with eight of these later died of wounds. Four escaped unhurt. The villagers suffered 28 dead and 22 wounded and captured about 100 rifles and 25,000 rounds of ammunition. Afterwards, it was Afterwards, U.S. Army General Jacob H. Smith conducted a pacification operation against Samar that resulted in an estimated 2,000 civilians killed and over 200 homes burned. Memorials The Americans killed on Balangiga Massacre were recovered and transported to the United States for burial. Connell is buried at the United States Military Academy Post Cemetery at S-2, R-E, G-77. Bumpus is buried at Bumpus in Quincy, MA. Griswold is buried at Duck River Cemetery in Old Lyme, CT.
