| Location Eastern Samar Province spans the eastern portion of Samar Island in the Eastern Visayas (Region VIII) in the Visayas (Visayas Islands) in the central Philippines. Also known as Western Samar Province. To the southwest is Leyte Island and to the south borders Leyte Gulf. Wartime History During the Battle for Leyte Gulf one of three related actions including the Battle of Surigao Strait, Battle Off Samar and Battle off Cape Engano.
