Location Lat 12° 40' 17N Long 123° 52' 30E Bulan (Bulsan) is located at an elevation 13' / 3m in Sorsogon Province on the southwest tip of the Bicol Peninsula in the Bicol Region (Region V) of southeastern Luzon in the Philippines. To the northeast roughly 5 miles away is San Francisco. Today known as the Municipality of Bulan. Prewar During 1901 during the Philippine Insurrection, U.S. Army soldiers operated in Bulan and based USS Don Juan de Austria between January 12 - June 22, 1901. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese. During 1943, built by the Japanese built Bulan Airfield. By early April 1945, most of the Japanese defenders on the Sorsogon Peninsula had withdrawn to the north of Bulan. On April 8, 1945 patrols from the U.S. Army, 158th Regimental Combat Team (158th RCT), Anti-Tank Company (AT Company) reach Bulan and request reinforcements to attack the remaining Japanese in the low hills near San Francisco. On April 12, 1945 the 2nd Battalion arrives in Bulan driving along Highway Route 1 from Daraga and join the attack against San Francisco. On April 18, 1945 the Americans turn over mopping up the rest of Sorsogon Province to guerrillas and depart the area. Bulan Airfield (Sorsogon Airport) Located to the north of Bulan.
