Location Lat 12° 40' 17N Long 123° 52' 30E Located on the southwestern tip of the Bicol peninsula on southeastern corner of Luzon. Also known as "Bulan City". During 1901 during the Philippine Insurrection, US Army troops operated in Bulan and the town was visited by US Navy ship USS Don Juan de Austria during January 12 - June 22, 1901. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese during the war. By early April 1945, most of the Japanese defenders on the Sorsogon Peninsula had concentrated in low hills north of Bulan. Scouted by the US Army 158th Infantry, Antitank Company during early April 1945 and reinforcements were requested to attack. On April 12, 1945 the 2nd Battalion, 158th Infantry, arrived at Bulan driving along Highway Route 1 to from Daraga to neutralize the Japanese at this location. During April 12-16, the 2nd Battalion (reinforced) infantry attacked with fire support from 105mm howitzers from the 147th Field Artillery plus support from 5th Air Force (5th AF) aircraft. The Americans suffered only six wounded in action. The Japanese lost at least 150 dead and 155 Formosan laborers were taken prisoner. Afterwards, Filipino guerrillas conducted mopping up operations.
