Location Lat 9° 18' 25N Long 123° 18' 27E Dumaguete is located at an elevation of 3' on the southeast coast of Negros Island in Negros Oriental Province in the Central Visayas Region (Region VII) in the Visayas (Visayas Islands) in the central Philippines. Also known as Dumaguete Town. Today known as Dumaguete City. Borders Dumaguete Harbor (Port of Dumaguete). To the north is Sibulan. Wartime History During 1942 occupied by the Japanese. By April 1945 the remaining Japanese on Negros were in the central mountains and Dumaguete and the U.S. Army believed they had fortified the town. In early February 1945 the Japanese established a midget sumbarine base in Dumaguete Harbor. By the middle of April 1945, U.S. Army 40th Division reconnaissance elements approached Dumaguete. On April 26, 1945 they linked up with the Americal Division, 164th Regimental Combat Team (164th RCT) that landed at Sibulan and together with the 40th Division entered Dumaguete and found no organized resistance until reaching the mountains to the southwest. Japanese defenses in that area were not overcome until the middle of June 1945. On June 9, 1945 the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regimental (503rd PIR) took over garrison duty on Negros with Filipino guerrillas chasing the remaining Japanese in the interior. Dumaguete Airfield (Sibulan) Located to the north of Dumaguete, built prewar and expanded by the Japanese also known as Sibulan Airfield.
