Location Lat 14° 46' 0N Long 120° 13' 60E Grande Island is located at the entrance to Subic Bay. Borders Subic Bay to the north and the South China Sea to the south. To the east is Bataan Peninsula in Bataan Province to the southeast. Wartime History During 1885, the Spanish established an anchorage and coaling station at Subic Bay and fortified Grande Island. The Spanish planned to emplace four 5.9" guns on the island. Occupied by the Japanese during 1942 until the end of January 1945. On January 30, 1945 US Army troops landed on Grande Island supported by US Navy carrier aircraft from Task Group 77.4. Today Part of the island is the Grande Island Resort, open to tourists and guests, with boat service daily from Subic Bay. The resort provides tours of the fortifications for guests.
